The Japanese government has agreed to provide a grant of MVR 73,450,000 in assistance to Maldives.
The grant agreement was signed between the countries during the Maldives Partnership Forum currently ongoing at Kurumba Maldives by Japanese Ambassador to the Maldives Keiko Yanai and Maldivian Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid.
Last December, Foreign Minister Shahid conducted discussions with his Japanese counterpart Tarō Kōno on ways in which the two countries can work together towards social development in the Maldives.
Bilateral relations between Maldives and Japan were established on November 14, 1967. The Japanese government has extended their assistance to the Maldives to develop fishing, environment and education sector in the past. In 2014, they assisted the Maldives following the Indian Ocean tsunami disaster that affected the country.
