Top court judge's spouse dismissed from political post

Supreme Court Justice Abdulla Didi's spouse Aniya Abdul Gafoor has been dismissed from her post as Deputy Ambassador to Malaysia.

Aniya was appointed to the post during former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom's rule, and continued to fill the position until her termination.

Her dismissal comes amid reports that US$ 1 million bribery funds that was allegedly accepted by her husband to jail former president Mohamed Nasheed was deposited into Aniya's Malaysian bank account.

While Aniya has been dismissed, her husband was last week suspended by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) over the accusations. However, Didi denied the allegations against him and filed a constitutional dispute at the Supreme Court requesting to dismiss the suspension. The Supreme Court issued a stay order on his suspension and ordered all authorities not to take any action against Judge Didi.

However, the JSC maintained their suspensions despite the Supreme Court's stay order, while the parliament's judiciary committee also backed JSC's decision. The parliament has since resolved that the JSC's decision was within the law.
