Defence Minister Mariya Ahmed Didi has stated that the burden of foreign debt hinders socio-economic development, as well as causes risks to national security.
Minister Mariya is visiting the Russian Federation to take part in the 10th International meeting of High Rankling Officials Responsible For Security on the special invitation of the Russian Security Council Secretary.
Addressing at the meeting, Minister Mariya spoke on 'hybrid threats' targeted towards vulnerabilities of the nation, and highlighted the dangers and challenges it poses to the country's security and development.
The minister spoke on vulnerabilities caused by climate change and acts such as piracy, and noted that the burden of foreign debt hinders the country's socio-economic growth.
Linking national security to socio-economic development, Minister Mariya said any challenge posed to the country's security will directly affect the health and safety of the citizens.
Maria said as a small island nation, the Maldives feels and understands the true meaning of vulnerability and are also aware of effects and consequences of such vulnerabilities.
Maria urged all countries to work together toward the common goal of addressing security risks and challenges.
Minister Maria earlier met with the Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, Nikolai Patrushev and is scheduled to meet with the Russian Defence Minister Sergey Shoygu during her trip.
