A 16 year old girl has given birth to a baby fathered by a 15 year old in Lhaviyni Naifaru.
While Naifaru Island Council has confirmed the reports, AVAS has learnt that the girl gave birth at the atoll hospital a little over a week ago. Both mother and baby are doing well.
A member of Naifaru council revealed to AVAS that the baby was fathered by a 10th grade student enrolled at Madrasatul Ifthithah.
The case has now been presented to Maldives Police Srvice by the Gender Ministry.
The Ministry revealed that the situation was brought to the attention of the ministry's Family and Children Service Center by Naifaru Hospital. Social and mental support necessary for the mother and baby are being provided, the ministry said.
Being a Muslim country, premarital sex is a criminal offence punishable by law. A similar incident recently occurred where a 15 year old gave birth to a baby sired by her lover. The baby did not survive the birth due to complications.
