Govt. conducts discussion with Russia on fish export

Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid held discussions with the Russian government on increasing the varieties of fish products exported to Russia from the Maldives.

Minister Shahid, who is currently visiting the Russian Federation on an official call on Tuesday met with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov and discussed enhancing the friendship that exists between both couturiers.

Foreign Ministry revealed that the discussions on increasing export of Maldivian fish to Russia was conducted during the meeting, with the Russian Foreign Ministry giving assurance that he would find a solution for the challenges faced by the Maldives in exporting fish to Russia.

The two ministers also spoke on enhancing cooperation in areas of mutual interest such as the tourism sector, and battling climate change and terrorism.

A visa waiver agreement that would issue a 90-day on arrival visa to Maldivians traveling to Russia was also signed between the two governments during the meeting.

Recent statistics show fish products worth over US$ 199 million were exported to Russia from the Maldives in 2017.
