Sofwan resigns from Broadcom ahead of parliament vote

Member of Maldives Broadcasting Commission (Broadcom) Ismail Sofwan resigned from the commission on Wednesday.

Chair of the parliament's committee on independent Institutions and Meedhoo MP Rozaina Adam confirmed that Sofwan's letter of resignation was received by the parliament. His resignation comes while a parliament vote on his dismissal as per the committee's recommendation was impending at the parliament.

In the resignation letter addressed to Speaker of the parliament Mohamed Nasheed, Sofwan said he was unable to report for official duties as he has been seeking treatment for an extended time over an illness. As he believes taking consecutive leaves of absence from his work would stand in the way of him fulfilling his responsibilities, it is best for him to resign from his position, said Sofwan in his letter.

His letter further assured that he had not influenced any members of the commission in any way during his time on the commission, and asserted that he had not conducted himself in a manner that would reap him personal benefits.

Broadcom had earlier notified the parliament committee that Sofwan last reported to work during mid-November last year. Since then, he has not presented himself to work, although his monthly salary is always withdrawn.
