Statistics have projected that the population of Maldives would reach one million by year 2054.
The country already faces challenges in providing adequate housing, and health care services to its people.
The statistics publicized by National Bureau of Statistics on the occasion of World Population Day states that at its current rate, the population of Maldives is expected to reach a million in 35 years, with 557.537 Maldivian citizens and 416,822 foreigners residing in the country.
While the current population of Maldives is at 372,739, the statistics revealed that 161,202 foreigners are currently residing in the Maldives,
54% of the estimated population of 1 million will reside in the Greater Male' Area, it is predicted. This is around 500,000 people in the Male' area alone.
The population of children is expected to decrease, with the bureau forecasting that the decline will begin in year 2030 due to the decrease in number of people of childbearing age, and the increase in number of the aged population.
While 40% of women will earn a living, the population of employable people would reach 779,109 by 2054, the statistics predict.
42% of people above the age of 15 would not contribute to the economy, out of which 72% would be women, the statistics reveal.
According to the United Nation's statistics, the world population would reach 8 billion by 2050. The current world population is 7.7 billion.
