Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has warned action against entities and ministries that provide false information to parliament committees.
Concluding Wednesday's parliament sitting, the former president said he has been receiving complaints that some officials from institutions have been speaking in unclear terms, while some are suspected of providing false information.
Nasheed stated that providing false information to the parliament is a criminal offence. He warned that if there are any suspicions that information provided are untrue, the matter will be investigated and sent to the Prosecutor General for charges to be pressed.
The 19th Parliament's committees have been summoning state entities and and ministries almost everyday for questioning regarding different cases. Recently, many entities were summoned for questioning over the MMPRC graft and certain murders.
President Nasheed further said that while officials are being summoned to several different committees for the investigation of the same case, it could cause difficulties to the parties to answer to multiple committees. He suggested that it would be wise if the committees work together in questioning state officials.
