Parliament approves to increase top court bench to seven

The parliament has approved to increase the number of Supreme Court justices from five to seven.

The bill submitted by Henveiru MP Ali Azim was passed with 74 votes in its favour, during Wednesday's parliament sitting.

Supreme was initially established as a seven-judge bench. However, in 2014, the bench was decreased to five judges, dismissing then Chief Justice Ahmed Faiz Hussain and Justice Ahmed Mu'thasim Adnan.

Increasing the Supreme Court bench is part of the government's Legislative Agenda.
