VP of European Commission to address at Maldives Parliament

Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has revealed that High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission Federica Mogherini will be addressing the Parliament during her upcoming visit to the Maldives.

Nasheed announced during Tuesday's parliament sitting that an invitation to address at the Parlimaent has been extended to Mogherini.

Foreign ambassadors, heads of European companies operating in the Maldives, senior officials from resorts and heads of relevant authorities will be invited to the function, said Nasheed.

"Mogherini wll not be addressing at an official sitting of the parliament. However, it is requested that all esteemed members are present at the event", said Nasheed.

Nasheed pointed out that Mogherini played a key role in EU's push for targeted sanctions against the then officials of the government which ultimately ensured a free and fair presidential elections last year.

During July last year, the EU Foreign Affairs Council adopted a framework for targeted restrictive measures against persons and entities responsible for undermining the rule of law or obstructing an inclusive political solution in the Maldives as well as persons and entities responsible for serious human rights violations.

However, the framework was revoked during June this year after the political situation in Maldives improved since the inauguration of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration in November 2018.

Foreign Ministry will be revealing the details of Mogherini's itinerary in the upcoming week.
