Speaker of the Parliament and former president of the Maldives Mohamed Nasheed has stated that he has full confidence in Foreign Minister, Abdulla Shahid. The Speaker’s comments come at a time when his political advisor and Kaadhishoo MP, Abdulla Jabir has announced his intention to file a motion seeking a no confidence vote against Shahid.
Earlier on Monday, Jabir, who is also the leader of Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) said the foreign policies of the Maldives has failed and that Shahid must be held responsible for the failure. The state has failed at establishing equal relationships among foreign countries due to Shahid’s incompetence, said Jabir. He would therefore file a motion seeking Shahid’s dismissal with the signature of 10 MPs to back his move, announced Jabir.
At least ten signatures are needed to seek a no confidence motion against a cabinet minister.
Believed to be in reference to Jabir’s announcement, Nasheed posted a tweet on Friday expressing his confidence in the minister. Shahid responded to the tweet, thanking the former president for his support.
