Former President of Maldives and current Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has founded an organization to work towards environmental protection.
Nasheed's 'Maldives Coral Institute' was officially registered by Sports and Community Empowerment Ministry on Monday.
The organization's office will be based at President Nasheed's residence, G. Canary. Mariyam Raahil Naseem from G. Aanooraanee will be working alongside President Nasheed in running the organization.
The organization will focus on identifying ways to develop the country in a sustainable manner despite the challenges faced by the country due to climate change. The organization will work to figure out ways to develop islands in a way that the environmental impact of the development would be minimal.
While an organization has been established by President Nasheed for environmental protection, he also established an office in Hithadhoo, Addu City last year for the same purpose.
