Nasheed's proposal to form super committee rejected by MDP PG Group

Main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s Parliamentary Group has rejected former president Mohamed Nasheed's proposal to form a super committee to appoint and dismiss members from independent entities.

Currently, the relevant parliament committee is responsible for researching candidates proposed by the government and recommending suitable judges and members to independent commissions for parliament approval.

However, Nasheed, who is the current Speaker of the parliament proposed to form a super committee to take over the responsibility of appointing and dismissing members from independent entities.

Stating that all political parties must be involved in appointing members who possess integrity to the independent commissions, Nasheed proposed that the super committee would include the heads of all parliament committees and leaders of all political parties who are parliament members.

According to the amendment, Nasheed himself will be chairing the super committee, and the committee will research the names proposed by the government and make a recommendations to the parliament.

However, it has been reported that the members of the MDP Parliamentary Group are not in favor of the proposal. AVAS has learnt that the Parliamentary Group rejected the proposal even after Nasheed's name was removed as a member of the super committee.

It is likely that Nasheed's name was later removed when the members expressed concern that Nasheed was attempting to influence the appointment of members.
