Maldives establishes diplomatic relations with Rwanda

Maldives and Rwanda established diplomatic relations between the two countries on Friday.

The official diplomatic documents was signed in a ceremony held at Permanent Mission to Rwanda in New York.

The Joint Communiqué formalising diplomatic relations between the two countries was signed on behalf of the Government of Maldives by Permanent Representative of the Republic of Maldives to the United Nations, Thilmeeza Hussain. The Permanent Representative of the Republic of Rwanda to the United Nations, Valentine Rugwabiza signed the document on behalf of the Government of Republic of Rwanda.

Foreign Ministry said establishing and cultivating meaningful partnerships with every country that respects and values the friendship is an important priority of the foreign policy of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

Following the establishment of diplomatic relations with Rwanda, the Maldives currently maintains diplomatic relations with 172 countries. Rwanda is the second country with which the Maldives established diplomatic under the current administration.

Rwanda is a Member of Commonwealth and is scheduled to host the Commonwealth Heads of Governments Meeting (CHOGM) in 2020 in its capital Kigali.
