Vice President Faisal Naseem Sunday met with institutional representatives and held broad discussions regarding safety during sea transportation.
The meeting held at the office was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, the Coast Guard and Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF).
The President's Office said discussions were mainly focused on finding additional ways to ensure safety at sea during transportation of residents and cargo, including necessary changes which need to be brought to the rules and regulations, an early alert system in case of an incident, and awareness campaigns regarding sea safety and operation of small seafaring vessels.
Moreover, further discussions were held regarding measures to ensure that all rules and regulations are being fully adopted and executed by all transporters, and incorporating island and atoll councils in monitoring the implementation process. Discussions were held on re-convening the National Search and Rescue Committee to find ways to address such issues, the President's Office revealed.
