Addu City council discusses issue of extremism with Defense Minister

Addu City Councilors have met with Defense Minister Mariya Ahmed Didi and brought the issue of the spread of extremist ideologies in the southernmost atoll to the government’s attention.

The Defense Ministry revealed that the council members attended an official meeting with Addu City Council held at the Ministry on Thursday. During the meeting, the councillors noted the propagation of extremist ideologies within their city.

The Addu City Council expressed concern on the matter of extremism within the city as it has become a much-talked about issue in the community. There have been reports of Maldivians recruiting and enabling those with extremist ideologies to travel to foreign countries as fighters.

Additionally, Council members highlighted the hardships they face during natural disasters. They also noted the limitations of not owning a formal state vehicle to transport VIP guests visiting the city.

Recently, massive search operations were conducted Addu City in respect to the report issued by the Presidential Commission on the abduction and murder of Miniwan News Journalist Ahmed Rilwan. Council members disclosed certain individuals named in the report as extremists living in the city.
