PPM, PNC organize telethon to raise funds for fire victims

Opposing Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and Peoples' National Congress (PNC) are organizing a telethon to raise funds for the victims of Friday night's tragic fire.

Over 400 people were affected in the fire which originated at a chemical warehouse in Henveiru ward of capital Male' and torched down four warehouses and six homes. A 46-year old woman died in the incident.

Speaking at a press conference held Saturday on behalf of the two parties, former defence minister and current Maduvvary MP Adam Shareef announced their decision to organize a telethon, and requested public support.

While some administrative work need to be finalized before commencing the telethon, a special bank account will be opened for the purpose, he said. The party is in the process of opening the account for transparent conduct of the telethon, while all other preparations have been finalized, said Shareef.

During the pres conference, Sareef expressed concern that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had departed to the United States to attend the 74th Annual Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) during this time of national crisis, and condemned the move.
