Arrangements being made to receive financial donations for fire victims

National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and Bank of Maldives (BML) are working jointly to set up bank accounts to receive financial donations for the victims of Friday's nights massive fire that torched down seven buildings in capital Male'.

Speaking at a press conference held by relevant authorities on Saturday, Chief Executive of NDMA Hisaan Hassan said accounts will be set up at Bank of Maldives, to which donations can be sent. The authority is also working to make arrangements for donations to be made to the Disaster Management Fund, said Hisaan.

"We will deposit the funds into the Disaster Management Fund when benefactors deposit the funds at the bank", said Hisaan, noting that a large number of people wish to assist the victims financially.

While 173 people are registered at the temporary shelter established at Kalaafaanu School, accommodation has been arranged for the victims at local guest houses and other locations. The extent of the damages caused have not yet been assessed.

However, the whole lives of some families were destroyed in the fire, with all their belongings charred. While these families begin to rebuild their lives, the government has announced their decision to extend financial assistance to the victims of the incident.
