Minister Shahid sends message of condolence to Pakistan Foreign Minister

The Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid has sent a message of condolence to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi, following the earthquake in northern Pakistan.

"It was with deep shock and sadness that I learnt about the powerful earthquake that struck northern Pakistan yesterday, leading to the loss of innocent lives, injuring hundreds and destroying homes and infrastructure", read the message.

In his message, Minister Shahid extended the heartfelt sympathies of the the Government and the people of the Maldives, and requested to convey condolences to the members of the bereaved and affected families.

The 5.8 magnitude earthquake killed at least 38 people and injured hundreds in Pakistan. While Upper Dheer, Lower Dheer, Suwath and Bajaur of Pakistan were most heavily affected, some of the roads in these areas had huge cracks in the middle of the road due to the force of the quake. Relief teams are taking tents, food, drinking water and medical supplies to the worst affected areas.
