Former President of the Maldives Mohamed Nasheed has announced plans to run for a second term as main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s President.
While the post of Party President and Deputy President has become vacant, an election will be held on November 22 to elect members to the posts. Those interested in applying for the posts are to submit their applications before Saturday.
The former president of the party and the current Speaker of the Parliament, Nasheed on Monday announced that he intends to run for another term as the party President. In his Twitter post announcing his candidacy, Nasheed requested party members to vote for him in the upcoming internal election of the party.
After the party announced for submissions for the vacant posts on Monday night, several members of the party began a social media campaign to re-elect Nasheed for the post.
Those who are registered to the party by Saturday will be eligible to vote in the election, the party has said.
Nasheed was elected the President of the Maldivian Democracy Party in August 2014.
