Nasheed submits candidacy papers seeking re-election as MDP President

Speaker of the Parliament and former president of the Maldives Mohamed Nasheed has submitted candidacy papers seeking a second term as the President of main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

The papers were handed over to MDP's Secretary General Anas Abdul Sattar on Saturday morning.

Nasheed also submitted a document with the signatures of over 400 MDP members who supported Nasheed in his re-election bid.

The support of at least 400 party members are required to run in the internal election of the party. The election is slated to be held on November 22, during which a Deputy President will be elected for the party in addition to the President.

Minister at the President's Office and former deputy leader of MDP Mohamed Shifaz, and Hithadhoo Uthuru MP Mohamed Aslam are competing for the Deputy President post.
