New generator procured to power Addu tertiary hospital

FENAKA Cooperation has procured a new generator to power the tertiary hospital built at Addu City's Conventional Center.

Speaking at a ceremony held to award Addu city's power project to a Chinese company, Managing Director of FENAKA Corporation Ahmed Saeed Mohamed said there are challenges to powering the tertiary hospital using the generator current available in the city. A new generator of 1 megawatt has therefore been procured to power the hospital, and has already arrived in the Maldives, he said.

"A one mega watt generator has been procured. However, even this will not be enough", Ahmed Saeed said.

Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom initiated the project to convert the conventional center built by his predecessor President Mohamed Nasheed, into a modern, 100-bed tertiary hospital. The project awarded to Alia company has now been completed and handed over to the government.

In answer to a question asked by Hithadhoo Dhekunu MP Imbrahim Nazil at a press conference held Wednesday, Ahmed Saeed said Addu city already has a generator that can produce 20 - 25 megawatts of electricity. However, only 6 megawatts of power is being produced due to the generators being old.

"From our forecast, even the new 20 mega watt generator will not be enough. Therefore we are installing the generators in such a way that the power that is generated can be increased up to 36 mega watt." Saeed said.

Saeed revealed that the two new generators that will replace the current generators will arrive in the Maldives in the next two weeks.

"We can produce enough electricity for 15 months so that people of Addu city do not have to worry about power issues", he said.
