Minister of Home Affairs, Imran Abdulla has stated that it is the duty of religious scholars to convey true teachings of Islam and spread Islamic knowledge.

Imran made these remarks following increasing calls in the parliament to ban Jammiyath Salaf, a key organisation working to spread Islamic knowledge in the Maldives. Several members of main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) have called to immediately ban the organization.

The Parliament Committee on National Security Services has concluded that Jammiyath Salaf is an extremist organization, and has decided to look into the organization's finances and identify those funding the organization.

In a tweet posted Friday, religious scholar and Home Minister Imran Abdulla wrote that it is the duty of religious scholars to convey the correct Islamic principles and teachings.

"It is wrong to describe and portray extremist acts carried out in the name of Islam, and sincere efforts to spread Islam as the same act", wrote Imran in his tweet.
