Parliament extends current session by a week

The parliament has extended its third session of the current term by an additional week.

The decision to extend the session until December 5th was made during Tuesday's parliament sitting with 32 members voting in favour of the extension. Two members voted against delaying the recess.

According to parliament rules, the third session of the current parliament will be from October 1st to end of November. If an extension is sought, a vote is required to be taken.

Speaking at Tuesday's sitting, Speaker Mohamed Nasheed said important bills had been submitted at the parliament, therefore, the parliament wished to extend is session to attend to the bills.

Work pending at the parliament include approving the MVR 37.8 billion budget proposed for next year, the Income Tax bill, amendments to the chapter on decentralization in the constitution, and amendments to the decentralization act.

While the budget review committee has concluded their work and forwarded it to the parliament floor, the pending bills are at committee stage. It has been reported that the parliament aims to conclude work on the bills before the end of the current session.
