The demolition of Dhoonidhoo Prison has commenced.
The work was initiated by Home Minister Imran Abdulla and Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed.
In a tweet posted on Tuesday, Minister Imran wrote that several changes need to be brought to the jails to improve its conditions. The decision to stop using some custodial facilities at the jail, and demolishing the sites is a step forward, the minister said.
Shutting down the prison was recommended in the report compiled for President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih by the Prison Audit Commission during April this year.
The renovation of the demolished prison is expected to be completed during 2020.
