Police once again granted authority to utilize tagging system

Police have once again been given the authority to monitor and control individuals for criminal justice purposes by allowing tagging people under court orders.

Home Minister Imran Abdulla has said that the administrative and implementation difficulties and challenges that were faced when previously using tagging will not be faced this time around.

Although the employment of the tagging system with modern resources is currently used mainly under the Prevention of Terrorism Act, the government aims to reduce the number of people being held in jail by introducing more procedures that can utilize “Monicon” in the justice system, Minister Imran said.

The first application of the tag was carried out on Ahmed Ismail, the suspect accused in the abduction and murder of journalist Ahmed Rilwan Abdulla. He was released under certain conditions last Wednesday.
