'The parliament will ensure laws are upheld and rights protected' - Nasheed

Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has stated that the parliament will remain as a key institution that protects the rule of law and the rights enshrined in the Constitution.

Nasheed made the statement in a tweet published on the occasion of Human Rights Day.

Sending greetings of the occasion, Nasheed said the parliament will ensure the country's laws are upheld and that the rights of the country's citizens are protected.

A ceremony was held Tuesday to mark International Human Rights Day. Speaking at the ceremony, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih assured that the administration will protect the constitutional rights of every citizen without any form of bias, prejudice or discrimination.

Noting that ensuring a dignified life for every citizen is among the Administration’s main pledges, the President said that the administration gives the highest precedence to the improvement of living conditions through which the people may experience the true meaning of living a dignified life and that this can only be accomplished through preserving their rights and freedoms.
