Foreign Minister Shahid arrives in India on official visit

Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid arrived in India on Wednesday morning on an official visit.

Minister Shahid is visiting India to attend the 6th India - Maldives Joint Commission Meeting (JCM) scheduled to be held on 13 December 2019. A delegation comprised of various agencies dealing with the thematic areas being reviewed at the JCM, is also accompanying the Minister, said the Foreign Ministry.

In a tweet posted by the foreign minister, Minister Shahid said he hopes to meet his counterpart, External Affairs Minister of India Dr. Subramaniam Jayashankar during the visit.

This is the second official visit to India undertaken by the Foreign Minister.

The Maldives - India Joint Commission was established under the Agreement on Economic and Technical Cooperation signed between the two countries in 1986, with the primary aim of improving bilateral relations in all spheres. The last session of the JCM was held in 2015, in Male’.

The government of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih have strengthened formerly strained relations with India since they began administration in November 2018. While Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has visited the Maldives on two occasions since then, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has also visited India. Senior delegations from Maldives continue to travel to India frequently. Currently, a delegation of 15 parliamentarians including Speaker Mohamed Nasheed are in India on an official visit.
