Vice President Faisal Naseem has stated that since President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih assumed office, his foremost priority has been to ensure the safety and security of the people.
He made these remarks at Social Centre grounds while launching the 'Road Safety Walk' - a national road safety awareness program held all over Maldives simultaneously on Friday.
Speaking at the event, the Vice President said that the program was introduced under the administration's efforts to raise awareness on road safety. He further noted the pressing need to take caution when walking, and driving on the streets.
Vice President Faisal stressed that recurring road accidents have put individual lives in enormous danger and the public in a state of panic. He highlighted that while no one desires their children to be subject to such a tragedy, it is within the capacity of each individual to control the situation.
"Laws and regulations are made for the protection of the people. They are not formed to harm the people under any circumstances. They are formed for our safety and security", Faisal said.
Addressing the increasing demographic of expatriates in Maldives under various levels of employment, the Vice President stated that we can only see improvements in their conduct if the Maldivian people lead by example. He further noted that it is our responsibility to educate these individuals on the laws, regulations, and standards of our country.
"As a nation we aim to go forward. Thus, while we go forward with the progressing development of our country, we need to do better in all aspects. Road interactions, driving, walking - these are all areas we need to improve on", Faisal said.
'Road Safety Walk' was initiated to raise road safety awareness among the public by the collaboration of the Ministry of Health and Maldives Police Service as well as public, and private organizations.
