President consults JSC on Supreme Court nominee

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has consulted with the Judicial Services Commission (JSC) on the appointment of former Chief Justice Ahmed Faiz Hussain to the Supreme Court bench.

President Solih forwarded the name of Ahmed Faiz Hussain to JSC on Tuesday, the president revealed via a tweet posted on the same day.

Uz Ahmed Faiz Hussain had earlier served as the Chief Justice of the Maldives when the Supreme Court was first formed. However, Faiz lost his position when the government of former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom amended laws such that the Supreme Court bench was decreased from seven to five judges, along with the current Chief Justice Mu'thasim Adnan.

While Mu'thasim has been reappointed to the Supreme Court as the Chief Justice, Dr. Azmiralda Zahir, Judge Aisha Sujun, Judge Mahaz Ali Zahir and Judge Husnu-Al-Suood are currently on the Supreme Court bench.
