The suspect in the murder of a taxi driver Gasim Hassan in reclaimed suburb Hulhumale' has confessed to the crime, authorities said Friday.

Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed via a tweet revealed that the suspect arrested on Thursday night was the murderer, and confirmed that he confessed to the crime. The clothes he was wearing on the night of the murder has been recovered in the vicinity of the crime scene, the commissioner revealed.

CP Hameed said the Criminal Court has remanded the man into custody for 15 days. Police are currently working on obtaining more evidence against the man, he added.

The 59-year old taxi driver was found critically injured on a deserted street of Hulhumale' on the night of December 4th. He died at Hulhumale' Hospital while being treated for the deep wounds sustained to his neck and arm in the attack.

On December 12th, the commissioner revealed that the police retrieved crucial forensic evidence from the crime scene of Gasim's murder. The murder weapon was recovered from roadside bushes 300 meters away from where Gasim was found, said the CP, adding that the authorities had obtained the DNA and fingerprint of the attacker.

Commissioner Hameed further revealed that the movement of Gasim's taxi in Hulhumale' had been identified using multiple CCTV footage. A team of investigators are following up on the leads to identify and apprehend the suspect(s), the commissioner had written.

It was reported that Gasim was involved in an accident the day before his murder in capital Male'. According to reports, the driver and passenger on the motorcycle involved in the accident had threatened Gasim.
