Male' City mayor alleges ex-pres released drug dealers from prison

Male' City Mayor Shifa Mohamed has stated that jailed drug dealers were released back into society by former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom.

Shifa made the statement in reply to a tweet posted by a citizen who expressed her shock at the news of drug business in Male'. 37 people were arrested in a drug operation earlier this week.

When the police had raided five households under the operation, arrangements were made at the locations such that buyers can use the purchased drugs on site. The businesses were being run as 'drug cafés' with high security.

Throwing serious allegations against President Yameen, Mayor Shifa said several criminals who were put away for drug trade were released by the president elected in 2013.

"We have not forgotten this yet," said Shifa.

The police said the current drug crackdown in capital Male' is targeted at premises that offer 'drug services'. During a press conference held earlier this week, the police said the services are being provided at locations in Male' city with the permission of the property owners.
