Improving investigative capabilities of police an area of focus for 2020

Improving investigative capabilities of the Maldives Police Service is a key area of focus for 2020, the Commissioner of Police has revealed.

In a tweet posted by Commissioner Mohamed Hameed, following a meeting with the officers who had a role in detecting taxi driver Gasim Hassan's murder case, said the work of the officers were undeniably meticulous and helped to boost public confidence. However, the police still have a lot to do to improve their investigative capabilities, which will be a key area of focus in 2020, said the CP.

57 year old taxi driver Gasim Hassan was found critically injured on a deserted street of reclaimed suburb Hulhumale' on the night of December 4th, and died shortly after he was taken to the hospital. On Tuesday this week, the police revealed important information on the investigation. The murderer who stabbed Gasim with a sharp knife was identified and arrested, and crucial information was obtained for the investigation. The killer has confessed to his crimes and gave information on the murder to the police and in court.

Police said Gasim was attacked after a failed attempt to rob him and that according to the killer, had not intended to murder the driver when he stabbed him.
