Economic Minister Fayyaz Ibrahim has expressed his confidence that Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) is capable of operating and managing the new seaplane terminal being established at the country's main airport.
Fayyaz on Monday stated that while lucrative contract with India's GMR Group to develop and run Velana International Airport (VIA) was cancelled as MACL has the ability to do the job, MACL is more than capable of running a comparatively smaller operation such as the seaplane terminal.
"..we will continue to respect and abide by agreements," added the minister.
The seaplane terminal at VIA is being developed for MVR 848 million by MACL. Although the company can generate a high revenue and profit for the state when they begin operating the terminal after its completion, discussions to handover the operation of the terminal to Trans Maldivian Airways (TMA) has been entertained. The issue is currently being investigated by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
