Six seats for Kulhudhuffushi city, two for women

The Election Commission (EC) has decided to designate two seats for women out of the six seats decided for the recently declared city Hdh. Kulhudhuffushi, in the upcoming local council election.

The EC’s Vice President and Chief Spokesperson Ahmed Akram said on Tuesday night that there will be seven members in the Kulhudhuffushi City Council that is, a mayor and six councilors. Out of the six seats designated for Kulhudhuffushi, two seats will be designated for women in the upcoming local council election, Akram further added.

As per the Amendments to the Dececentralisation Act, seven councilors will be elected for the constituencies that have a population of 10,000 to 30,000. The population of Kulhudhuffushi is about 10,000. It is stated in the constitution that if a constituency has a minimum population of 10,000 then it shall be declared as a city. The President declared Kulhudhuffushi as a city on Tuesday.

In the upcoming council election, there will be four cities including Kulhudhuffishi.
