Kulhudhuffushi will be northern business hub: Minister Shahid

The Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid has said that in the presidency of Ibrahim Mohamed Salih, Kulhudhuffushi City will be the business hub of the northern region.

Minister Shahid said this in a tweet congratulating Kulhudhuffushi citizens on the occasion of Kulhudhuffushi being declared as a city.

Shahid said that while Kulhudhuffushi is declared as a city, it will become the hub for business in the northern region in the presidency of Ibrahim Mohamed Salih. He further said that the government would be implementing decentralisation system fully.

There are several economic activities that are ongoing in Kulhudhuffushi even now and it is one of the main islands that run various businesses. Some individuals are involved in the business on a large scale in Kulhudhuffishi and the previous two governments have implemented major development projects on the island.

The island is declared as a city while the citizens of the island were raising concern over the delay in declaring it as a city.
Kulhudhuffushi being declared as a city, four city councils will be elected in the upcoming council election that is slated for 4th April 2020.

As per the Amendments to the Dececentralisation Act, seven councillors will be elected for the constituencies that have a population of 10,000 to 30,000. The population of Kulhudhuffushi is about 10,000. It is stated in the constitution that if a constituency has a minimum population of 10,000 then it shall be declared as a city.

There will be seven members in the Kulhudhuffushi City Council that is, a mayor and six councillors. Out of the six seats designated for Kulhudhuffushi, two seats will be designated for women in the upcoming local council election
