Transport Minister Aishath Nahula has announced the dates on which airports currently in development will be opened.
Speaking on local channel VTV on Wednesday night, Minister Nahula said the government aims to link all regions of the country through effective and efficient air travel.
Revealing that the government hopes to open new airports in 2020, Minister Nahula said some domestic airports will be opened early this year.
These include Funadhoo Airport, Maavarulu Airport, Madivaru Airport, Hoarafushi Airport and Fares Mathoda Airport, said Minister Nahula.
While Hoarafushi Airport is expected to be operational by August this year, Funadhoo Airport will be opened during January, revealed the minister. Maruvaalu Airport will be completed by March and Madivaru Airport will be opened the following In April said Nahula.
Although slight changes have been brought to Fares Maathoda Airport, the minister expressed her confidence that the airport will be opened on the expected timeline.
The transport minister further revealed that the Kulhudhuffushi Airport opened by the previous administration is not upto the standards desired by the current administration. Therefore, the airport will be developed further this year, said the minister, revealing that the required changes are being brought to the airport. Additional development changes are also being brought to Hdh. Hanimaadhoo airport, said the minister.
