Ruling coalition partner, Jumhooree Party (JP) has announced their decision to contest for all seats in the upcoming local council election.
The decision was made at a council meeting of the party held Sunday. Speaking to AVAS on the conclusions reached at the meeting, spokesperson of JP Ali Solih said the party will be fielding candidates for all island, city and atoll council seats. Candidates will also be fielded for the Women Development Committee by JP, said Ali Solih.
Those interested in contesting for the seats on a JP ticket can submit their applications starting Monday, revealed Solih.
Main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and opposing Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) will also be contesting for all seats in the election slated for April 4.
While a total of 980 councillors will be elected in the local council elections, this includes 372 female island councillors, 372 general island councillors, 179 island council presidents, 12 female city councillors, 24 general city councillors and 3 city council mayors. 33% of seats on the councils will be reserved for women as per recent amendments to the Decentralization Act.
