Prison not set-on fire: have distress

Maldives Correctional Services has denied the rumours that Male’ Remand Prison is set-on fire.

Corrections said that the news on jail conditions is false and the hearsay of jail being set on fire on Tuesday is not true.

The rumour of Male’ jail being set-on fire spread because some poisoners have set a bedsheet on fire and threw it outside the prison cell which was extinguished soon after. However, Corrections have not provided any information on that incident.

A Corrections Officer said that prisoners have some concerns and that has led to some unrest in the prison. Sometimes the prisoners skip meals however, that it is not a hunger strike since they do take meals sometimes, said the Prison Officer.

There were some reports that last Sunday the SO Police, Corrections Officers and Commissioner of Prisons Abdulla Munaz went to Maafushi Prison, sprayed tear gas, "kicked out" prisoners from their cells and kept them outside kneeling down. Some pictures of the prisons went viral as well. From then on prisoners have been causing some unrest in the prisons including throwing food into the prison officers.
