Cabinet discussed minimum wage with relevant authorities

The Cabinet, senior officials of the President’s Office and senior officials of the relevant authorities, discussed the minimum wage, on Tuesday.

The President’s Office revealed that the Ministry of Economic Development and Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) gave a special presentation in the meeting. The presentation was based on the report prepared by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and Pay Commission’s report.

The Pay Commission was formed on the 1st of May 2019 to collect information from the government offices and private sector and to identify the minimum wage that can be given for employees who work in various sectors.

During Tuesday’s meeting discussions were held on the minimum wage that shall be decided for various sectors and the effect it will have on those sectors. In that regards, the government’s budget, inflation, GDP, foreign currency reserve, small and medium enterprises, public companies which the government holds shares, and in general the effect it will have on the economy were discussed, revealed the President’s Office.

Deciding a minimum wage for employees in the Maldives is one of the pledges of the President. Deciding the minimum wage is included in the “Agenda 19” prepared by MDP, (the party which the president belongs to) for the parliamentary election. The minimum wage that shall be provided for various sectors is mentioned on the agenda.
