Former President and Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed has stated that the circumcisions of females is a sexual assault, and that steps needed to be take against those supporting the notion.
On a Tweet he posted Thursday, Speaker Nasheed said that we didn't need such a policy and noted that laws had now been put forth in relation to protecting children's rights.
Nasheed made these remarks following an appeal presented to the Islamic Ministry on clarifying the religious stand on the notion. Health Minister Abdulla Ameen has since stated to deny the appeal.
Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is a traditional practice, still profoundly rooted in many areas within the Arabic and African regions. However, health professionals have been consistently warning people against the act.
