'Will further decentralise the administration of MDP'

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has expressed the need to further decentralize the leadership and administration of main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

Speaking at a campaign workshop held in Laamu Gan to formulate pledges for the party's manifesto, President Solih said he would, as the party's highest leader, work towards further adapting decentralization within the party.

The president added that MDP has always been a party that organized effective political activities and campaigns ahead of elections. He also admitted the need to further decentralize the workings of the party, and widen its activities.

The president noted that a decentralization policy is important not only for the administration of the state but also for the administration of political parties. It is vital to empower branches of political parties with the necessary financial arrangements and resources required to administer the section, he added.

"As the party's most senior leader, I intend to further adopt decentralisation within the party, and empower constituencies with the finances and authority required to administer the branch. I will work towards this," said the president.

President Solih reiterated that the concept of decentralization was first introduced to the Maldives by MDP, and said members of the party wishes to run the councils under such a policy. If the citizens of the country were to vote for MDP in the upcoming local council elections, the party will bring about positive results, assured the president.

"I request all citizens to vote for MDP members in the upcoming local council election. Your votes will not be in vain, as the administration, parliament and the councils can bring about fruitful results," he said.

The local council election is slated for April 4.
