Formation of new political party would garner public support: Nazim

Former Defense Minister and Dhangethi MP Mohamed Nazim has stated that the formation of a new political party would garner public support.

Nazim made these remarks following rumour of him and former Police Commissioner and Thimarafushi MP Abdulla Riyaz forming a political party. He revealed that there has not yet been any discussions held on the matter.

He subsequently denied public claims that they had ceased efforts to form the party due to failed attempts, stating that there was no truth behind these allegations.

"I am someone who is currently serving an electoral position in the presence and support of the people. If there was a motivation to form a political party, we would have the people's support", said Nazim.

Riyaz has also denied these claims, stating that such work is done to serve the people and cannot be carried out in secret.

Both Nazim and Riyaz are members of Jumhooree Party (JP). However, recently neither individuals have been too keen on the party's political activities, having claimed they both have differences with the party. There have been no details provided in this regard.

Qasim Ibrahim's JP is currently reigned primarily by prominent individuals during former President Yameen Abdul Gayyoom's regime. Having previously been massive supporters of the former President, they had been heavily critical of JP leader Qasim. They joined the party following failed elections in government and Parliament as well.
