The Football Association of Maldives (FAM) has confirmed that the under-12 team of the Maldives will compete the Intercontinental Youth Football Competition to be held in Dubai next month.
After the Football Fiesta held with the former defender, Michel Salgado of Spain to mark Tourism Day last year, Tourism Minister Ali Waheed had announced that a team would be formed to contest in the Dubai competition, which includes the dream team scouted in the event. The dream team for Tourism Day was formed by Salgado and his associates.
FAM on Thursday revealed that the under-12 team of the Maldives will compete in the tournament to be held in Dubai from 13th February 2020 to 15th February 2020. FAM stated that it will be good exposure for the Maldives team as teams from all over the world will be partaking in the event including the U-13 teams of Spain's Real Madrid and Barcelona, Germany's Bayern Munich, Italy's Inter Milan and Portugal's Porto FC. Teams from Egypt, UAE and Saudi Arabia will also participate in the competition.
Having obtained the opportunity to contest with competitive teams of Europe, the tournament will be a golden opportunity for the Maldivian team to enhance their international experience, FAM further stated. The tournament is set to be played in Group stage, 8 aside format, followed by the team’s advancing into the knockout stage. All the games will take place at Dubai Sports City, a state-of-the-art, multi-venue sports complex in the most prominent location of Dubai, UAE, said FAM.
