Airports Company seeks contractor to complete runway work

An announcement is publicized seeking a contractor to reclaim the eroded approach-light area of Velana International Airport (VIA) runway.

Maldives Airports Company (MACL) that manages VIA said that they are seeking a party to reclaim, develop the road and build revetment of the area under the new runway project. The area was reclaimed during airport expansion, however, due to the lack of revetment, the coastal regions had eroded.

According to MACL, expression of interest can only be shown by the construction companies who have registered in line with the harbour construction works of the National Contractor Registry.

Interested parties can send the expression of interests by 13 February, 1400 hrs via letters, fax or emails and submit the bids by 26 February, 1400 hrs.

Former president Abdulla Yameen inaugurated the new runway on 6 September 2018. Even though the runway was opened, it is not used due to some pending finishing works, especially in the new seaplane terminal.

The runway was developed by China’s Beijing Urban Construction Group (BUCG) under a loan of US$ 373 acquired from China’s Exim Bank. The track is 3400-meter-long and 60 meters wide.
