877 application forms of MDP candidates received by EC

The Elections Commission has received candidacy papers submitted by 877 candidates representing the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) in the upcoming local council election.

Speaking at a press conference held by MDP on Sunday, the party's Deputy Secretary General Afshan Latheef said 877 application forms have been received by the Elections Commission thus far. Therefore, it is confirmed that 877 members representing the main ruling party will be contesting in the council election, said Afshan.

MDP held its primary to elect candidates for the local council election on January 31st. However, no candidates applied to contest for several seats. The party had later announced that the candidates had been selected for the uncontested seats,

Main opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) will be fielding 675 candidates for the council elections, the party has revealed. Candidates representing coalition partner Jumhooree Party and several independent candidates have also submitted their applications at the Elections Commission.

983 officials will be elected in the local council election slated for April 4. While 370 seats are designated for women, an additional 930 members will be elected to Women's Development Committees on the same day.
