Pres nominates Akram for second term as EC member

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has recommended to appoint Elections Commission member Ahmed Akram for an additional term as a commission member.

Akram's name was listed at the top of the nomination list forwarded to the parliament by the president. The commission is seeking a new member as the current term of Akram, who is also the commission's deputy, is coming to an end.

Akram is well-experienced in handling large elections. Akram was very active in organizing the 2017 local council election and the 2018 presidential election. He also played a large role in organizing the 2019 parliamentary elections. International organizations have commended the election and stated that it was well organized and executed.

Akram has been filling the role of the Spokesperson of the Elections Commission, even while several serious allegations were being targeted at the commission questioning its integrity. Akram is the media link that disseminates information regarding elections.

The president also named former commission member, Ahmed Fayaz Hassan for EC membership. Fayaz was the deputy president of the commission during the 2013 presidential election. He applied for the post of Information Commissioner in the past but was rejected by the parliament.

Mariyam Haneefa Khalid and Ahmed Mansoor have also applied for EC membership. The names have been forwarded to the parliament committee on independent commissions.
