COVID-19: Temporary restrictive measures initiated at Bathala Resort

Bathala Island Resort has been placed on lockdown after an Italian tourist holidaying on the island developed symptoms of COVID-19.

Under the current policy being followed in managing the outbreak, any islands with suspected cases of the virus will be placed on lockdown until tests confirm infection. Bathala Island is the fourth resort to be placed on lockdown since Friday.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) said testing is now underway. COVID-19 testing facilities are available in the Maldives. 33 people have been tested for the virus thus far, out of which two were positive.

While two expatriate employees of Kuredu Island Resort tested positive for the virus, they are currently quarantined at the isolation facility in Farukolhufushi. Both individuals contracted the virus from an Italian tourist who recently holidayed at the resort, who tested positive for the virus upon his return to Italy. Contact tracing is currently underway to identify those who were in contact with the infected patients.

Currently, both Kuredu Island Resort and Bathala Island Resort are on lockdown.
