Two additional people have tested positive for COVID-19 in the Maldives.
Health Protection Agency (HPA) said the two people are tourists holidaying at Kuramathi Island Resort.
HPA said the island has been placed on lockdown and efforts are underway to conduct 'contact tracing' to determine those who had come in contact with the infected tourists. The authority is closely monitoring the condition of the tourists and the island, assured HPA.
The total number of patients infected with the virus in Maldives has now reached 8.
While no locals have been infected with the virus thus far, the first two people who contracted the virus are two expatriate employees at Kuredu Island Resort. They caught the infection from an Italian tourist who had recently holidayed at the island, and had tested positive for the virus upon his return to Italy. Two more Italian tourists have tested positive for the virus from the same resort.
The remaining cases surfaced at Sandies Bathala Island Resort when two Italian tourists holidaying on the island tested positive for the virus. Both resorts have been placed on lockdown, with some people on the island placed in isolation.
