Elections Commission re-elects Akram as Vice Chairman

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has appointed Ahmed Akram as a member of the Elections Commission (EC). The Letter of Appointment was presented to him at a ceremony held Monday morning at the President’s Office.

At the ceremony, Ahmed Akram took his Oath of Office in the presence of Supreme Court Justice Uz Mahaz Ali Zahir.

Akram earlier served in EC as Vice Chairman. He has also previously served as Commissioner and Spokesperson at EC.

Following his appointment, Akram was unanimously elected as EC’s Vice Chairman for the second time in a meeting held among the commission's members.

Akram is the commission’s chief spokesperson. He has a close relationship with media, has experience in handling some of the most challenging elections held in the Maldives to date. Akram was the chief spokesperson for the last presidential election, in which EC was accused of tampering with the results by the main opposition party of the current administration.

The Elections Commission is comprised of five members. The other incumbent members are; Chairman Ahmed Shareef, member Ismail Habeeb, member Fuad Thaufeeq, and member Ali Nashath.
